Welcome back to the Bear Cave Podcast. Today, we’re bringing you a special perspective from someone who’s right in the middle of the journey—our student teacher. In this episode, we’ll talk about what it’s like stepping into the classroom for the first time, the challenges, the lessons learned, and the passion it takes to grow into an educator. Welcome to our peaceful for Bear King we have a host Amy and Jasmine and we have our student teacher guest Welcome to our barricade podcast and we just want to ask our first question which is um so please tell us your name and what college you're in my name is Jaylen Garcia I go by Miss Garcia and I go to Monroe University my name is via Cobra I go by Miss Cabrera and I go to marma university um my name is Dessa Evans I go by Miss Evans and I go to Monroe University um my first question I started out keep the trend going and I started out in row I just wanted to be a speech pathologist which would be someone who helps people who struggle with speech or would like to get better with their speech and as I started doing my student teaching where I was going into classrooms and working with students like elves I got more passionate about the job and I decided that I would like to stay in teaching for some time um so I started off in major in human services I I liked it by realized I want to work more with kids and once I started studying teacher I started falling in love with it and so I stayed in the career path um I first started out in um health and I kind of realized that it wasn't for me because I wasn't really a science person um so I decided to try education because 1 of my goals is to implement English teacher what grade are you guys like tried to teach I want to do the lowest I want to do fourth grade I probably want to go up to Middle School for like so forth to a third is what I would like to teach I like the little ones even though I'm going to school for first through 6 so if I could start out in fourth fifth grade that would be nice but I also would like to at some point do like Pre-K kindergarten first screen a great I would like to choose pretty much my favorite uh second grade is that your favorite grade what I feel like second grade that like in between like where they'll still need your help but they are a bit more independent which I um what is 1 thing you learn future classroom well it's funny I was talking about this yesterday I think there's many things that I learned from my teachers and um my co- teachers in the classrooms that I would like to take but 1 big thing is classroom management and engagement so classroom management has to do with with how the routines and like the rules and how the classroom runs on a day-to-day basis and engagement has to do with like how do I get you guys to care and then participate inside of the lessons and I think I have a lot of strategies that I learned from my teachers that I'd like to continue on I want to piggy back off of that I want to make learning fun and that's 1 our professors taught us like make learning so kids will want to learn like I try to make it fun and our classroom so you guys will want to participate and also classroom management because if you have no classroom management it will be no learning happening at all like the Jeopardy that that you guys played with the review yeah you know she did that in her class I use that in my class so these are different things that even though it's different classes different grades were able to use whenever because you know it's just about making learning fun yeah pretty much what I learned so far is like you have to be very organized um that's something Miss Gonzalez kindergarten so she does like she keeps everything like organized in her classroom and she also really taught me to like make sure you keep notes and document everything she just has like pretty much files with like her students progress what they say what they do what happens in the classroom and she really does like keep all that organizing together so like you'll never know when there's a situation where you might have to bring up like some of the information so you always what is your favorite subject to teach and why is that right now math I feel like I'm most comfortable teaching math because that's mostly what I've done um in my fieldwork and student teaching I'm from with that but I would love to teach social studies I agree with um Miss um I really like math because I feel like it's so easy to tie in different subjects like I can do a math read aloud or we can play a game with math where as with reading it's a little bit harder and you want to focus more on the children or students like yourselves actually being able to practice reading on your own just like me reading to you or a video reading to you yeah I pretty much agree with them I really enjoy teaching math which is interesting because math is not my favorite subject um but with the little kids like it's very like engaging and I do enjoy like what is this in the training do you need to become a teacher um so you need to take poor exams you have to take for exams complete certification workshops and you have to complete 400 hours of student teaching but we did 600 so we've been doing field work since we were freshmen so 600 in total we've done yeah and I think I can speak for all of us and that we're going to graduate so we're just going through the process of finishing our last couple of classes but we're all we're all set to be fully fully certified by May and you know we're all going to get our degree in June and yeah we're we're pretty much all set to be teachers if you figured out uh which school you're going to yet what what school are you trying to go to to lead to to your um teaching career well we have some options yes we do but PS4 is definitely on that list we've already tried to speak with Miss bladder about you know the possibility of of staying here you know we like the environment we like the other teachers and the students and the different grades like you guys are not in my class but we've build relationships and you know I see you I say hi Amy and I think that that's nice to be able to step into working into an environment like that like right away without having to go to a completely new place and have to get acclimated all over again I agree she really likes you guys she talks about you guys all the time in our University classes she's just being shy right now um yeah just like answer a question just like any school where like Community is very important like if I so I was like we're not relationship with the community around them like parents like that's something that 2 or 4 really does have a judgement like what is leading you to achieve your goal and what is your motivation I think that my peers like meaning my classmates um really help motivate me like sometimes I think to myself I can't wait to be able to call Vella and be like oh I need help with this lesson and you guys don't really see it but I do that with her now and I can't wait for it to be something where it's like my own classroom or sometimes you put Amazon list together and we say all of the things that we want in our classroom and what we want it to look like and it's fun like building that excitement with your friends um I imagine it's like that for you guys that you're going to graduate and you guys are talking about your graduation gowns like all of those things make you want to do what you have to do to be able to graduate when you need to I think that's a big motivator for me of mine is like why I started teaching like I feel like I want to be a change in the world and that's can start off young and children's lives like teaching is the only profession where you teach everything else so I like to be a part of that lie back to me motivated as long as my family as well my mom is willing supportive yeah I like agree with Bianca and jaw like pretty much we're keeping motivated is like wanting to make the change like I myself didn't really receive proper like education at least from my point of view like especially the area that I grew up in so like it really is a big deal to me and I would like to at least try to like make some changes and like really introduce kids to like a better education and the best way I can and the teachers Mr 2 or my professors in school showing us what a classroom environment looks like and the different strategies to try when we see those things it's it's very exciting to see like oh like I can't do this you know this is not some scary thing where I'm going to be in a classroom with 22 students and I'm not going to be able to like they show me that it's possible and very empowering what anchor chart are you are you most looking for for to make it um I would like to say a growth mindset in the chart because I feel like um to be able to learn you're going to make mistakes and that goes hand in hand with the teaching we make mistakes all the time but we learn from that so we can be able to be the best educated you can come in September when we have our own classrooms and those students when they make a lot of mistakes they try they like give up or don't want to continue if we get to point to know like mistakes help you grow how many how many students are you trying to play like how to hear class I just don't want over 30 yeah we can necessarily pick that but if I could have between 18 to 23 students I think that would be ideal I don't like a a tiny classroom I like to be able to have students but at the same time having a a small close-knit community would be nice because everyone can receive the attention that they deserve a person for a smaller 1 um hopefully it doesn't go over 20 yeah well we have 1 last question can you give us your best Roar in areas to 1
